Leh-Ladakh Quick Travel Tips
1. Reaching Leh
- Leh is best accessed by direct flights from Delhi, and via scenic but long road journeys from Manali or Srinagar (popular May-October). Allow for 2 days on the road and consider the need for local taxi services, as non-local commercial vehicles face restrictions.
2. When to Visit
- The best months for travel are late spring through summer (May to September), as most highways and mountain passes remain open, and weather is reliably pleasant for sightseeing and adventure.
3. Acclimatization & Altitude
- Upon arrival, particularly by air, spend the first 1-2 days in Leh allowing your body to adjust before traveling to higher or more remote regions, to prevent altitude sickness. Hydrate well and avoid strenuous activity initially.
4. Connectivity
- Leh, Nubra, and Kargil have good 4G-5G coverage. Other areas may have very limited or no mobile and internet signal, with JIO BSNL and Airtel as top choices. Carry a local prepaid/postpaid SIM (with photo ID) for best results.
5. Key Permits
- An Inner Line Permit is mandatory for most tourist-accessible places outside of Leh (e.g., Nubra, Pangong, Tso Moriri). These can be arranged in Leh and require government ID.
6. Essential Packing
- Layered clothing for warmth, high SPF sunblock, sunglasses, and a personal first-aid kit are all must-haves. Weather can shift quickly even in summer.
